Sodium hexametaphosphate is also known as graham's salt. Since it was discovered by graham in 1833, it has been a kind of polymer of sodium metaphosphate (NaP03) for 160 years. It is a transparent glass flake or white granular crystal. It is easily soluble in water but insoluble in organic solvents, and the aqueous solution is acidic. Very hygroscopic, exposed to the air, it can gradually absorb water and become viscose.
Because of its special structure and performance, it is widely used in production technology and scientific experiments.
Because it has specific complexing ability for metal ions, especially alkaline earth metal ions such as calcium and magnesium. Therefore, it is mainly used in boiler water softener, cleaning agent in fiber industry, bleaching and dyeing industry and flotation reagent in mineral processing industry.
With the continuous development of industrial production, the application of sodium hexametaphosphate has developed from water treatment, paper making, sugar pressing and food to smelting. The steel-making converter was gunned with sodium hexametaphosphate and some additives at a certain temperature and pressure, which greatly prolonged the life of the converter and achieved obvious economic benefits.
Sodium hexametaphosphate is used as food quality improver, pH regulator, metal ion chelating agent, adhesive and expanding agent in food industry. It is mainly used in beans, canned fruits and vegetables, which can stabilize natural pigment and protect food color. When used in meat products, it can improve water holding capacity and prevent fat in meat from spoiling. Adding stele wine can clarify the liquor and prevent turbidity. Because of its various characteristics, it is more convenient to use.
